Last time I wrote I was about to weave another networked twill that reminded me of lichen.

Although when I designed it the warp was orange/yellow and the weft was stone-coloured, I had lots of grey and pale brown 16/2 cotton already, a mixture of mercerised and un-mercerised. And I had a cone of orange 22/2 linen which I wanted to try as weft. Having never woven with linen I wanted to try it in the weft first, and my previous samples suggested it would make a nice fabric.

Here’s the version with a linen weft – I really like this and want to use more linen in my weaving.

The next version is with 30/2 silk as the weft – again a nice fabric, really soft and the shine of the silk accentuates the design.

The next version is in mercerised cotton for the warp and the weft.

And finally, I’ll weave a version on a totally different scale, in lambswool from J.C. Rennie which I sett at 12 ends per inch. But before that I need to revisit ‘Network Drafting – An Introduction’ by Alice Schlein as I’ve noticed some longer floats especially in the mercerised cotton version. They are only four-end floats but they are very noticeable, to my eye at least. And I thought designing on a network limited float length (depending on the tie-up of course). We shall see…
